Yoga practices calibrated and individualized for symptoms and conditions can stimulate digestion when it is sluggish and slow and soothe your gut when it’s inflamed or overstimulated by stress and anxiety.

Learn more about how to use yoga postures, breathing, sound, iRest meditation, diet, lifestyle, and Ayurveda (ancient medicine of India) for better digestion.

This lecture, discussion and yoga practice class series will get you started with accessible and sustainable techniques to use at home and with traveling.

Home practice handouts will be provided.

The format for the program will be a weekly check-in, lecture, yoga practice, guided meditation or relaxation and discussion.  An early and light lunch is recommended so that you are comfortable practicing by 1:30 pm.

Topics by Week will include:

Week 1: How Yoga, Nutrition & Lifestyle Habits Help Digestion + Soothing the Gut Yoga Practice for Cramps & Bloating+ Body Sensing Meditation

Week 2: Nutrition for Better Digestion: Restorative & Therapeutic Approaches + Soothing the Gut Yoga Practice for IBS-like symptoms + Guided Relaxation

Week 3: Modern Science & Ancient Wisdom for Better Digestion (Physiology of Digestion & Related Organ Systems, Role of the Nervous System, Principles from Ayurveda) + Stimulating the Gut Yoga Practice for Constipation + Inner Resource Meditation

Week 4: Stress Reduction and Anxiety Management Techniques + Stress & Anxiety Reduction Yoga Practice + Inner Resource Meditation

Teachers will include: 

Andrew Beaumont, MD, PhD, RYT-500, is a neurosurgeon specializing in diseases of the spine, with a research background in Physiology.  On a personal level he has a deep interest in and training in Yoga, Ayurveda and other traditional medicine systems. He has academic interest in understanding the modern physiology and science behind ancient wellness and healing modalities, including breathing, sound, and meditation.  He is a partner and teacher with 5 Koshas Yoga & Wellness and is faculty with the River Flow Yoga Teacher Training School.  Dr. Beaumont will lecture on physiology and traditional medicine systems and teach Yoga Therapy practices in the class series

Jay Coldwell, RYT-200, is a Viniyoga Wellness Instructor and iRest® Level 1 Teacher as well as a partner and studio manager with 5 Koshas Yoga & Wellness. He studies Vedic chant with Linda Spackman and is on the faculty of the River Flow Yoga Teacher Training School where he teaches Vedic chanting.  Jay has cultivated a lifelong interest in scripture, sacred music and chant and contemplative practice.  Jay will teach iRest® techniques, a meditation practice based on the ancient tradition of Yoga Nidra in this class series.  iRest® techniques promote peace and wellbeing.

Mary Hilliker, RDN, E-RYT 500, C-IAYT, is a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist and a partner, Certified Viniyoga Teacher and Yoga Therapist with 5 Koshas Yoga & Wellness.  She is the director and lead teacher for the River Flow Yoga Teacher Training School.  Mary will lecture on Yoga Therapy and Integrative Nutrition as well as teach Yoga Therapy practices in this class series.  One of her greatest joys is teaching accessible, sustainable and healing yoga to students, aspiring yoga teachers and experienced yoga teachers who are interested in learning more.
