Chanting & Yoga Philosophy Intensive

Ancient yet relevant in modern life.  Themes that relate to how to work with our minds, how to be in relationship with yourself and how to be in relationship with others.  The Yoga Sutra-s of Patanjali are a key philosophical text of yoga and a guidebook for being in the world.

In this intensive, you will:

  • Learn key lineage chants.
  • Understand basic Sanskrit chanting terms and how they are applied.
  • Chant and discuss the relevance of key sutras from the Yoga Sutra-s of Patanjali including themes of: What is Yoga, Fluctuations of the Mind, Practice and Non-Attachment, Obstacles to Practice, 8 Limbs of Yoga, Yamas and Niyamas (Ways to Deal with Emotional Disturbances in Relationship), Kriya Yoga (Keys to Personal Transformation) and Seeds of Suffering and Overcoming the Seeds of Suffering, Meditation.

Each Monday evening session will include chanting, lecture, discussion and a yoga practice relevant to the class theme.

Required:  A translation of Yoga Sutra-s of Patanjali.  Highly recommended:  Liberating Isolation by Frans Moors (available for purchase through the studio) or Embodying the Yoga Sutra: Support, Direction, Space by Ranju Roy and David Charlton.

Course is eligible for 30 hours of Continuing Education for Registered Yoga Teachers through Yoga Alliance.

Jay Coldwell

Jay Coldwell, RYT-200, a graduate of River Flow Yoga Teacher Training School, with Mary Hilliker. He is an iRest Level 2 Teacher, having studied with Richard Miller and Stephanie Lopez. Jay has studied Vedic Chant with Sonia Nelson and Linda Spackman at the Vedic Chant Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico, continues to study Yoga Sutra and Vedic Chant with Linda. Jay is also studying classical Non-dual Shaiva Tantra with Kathleen Knipp. 

Mary Hilliker

Mary’s intention is to meet you where you are and to help you move and change from that starting point. Her workshops and retreats highlight yoga tools and practices that help you gain self-sufficiency and independence in your home practice.

Mary has been a yoga practitioner for 30 years and a teacher for 21 years. She holds certifications as a 200 hr. level Hatha yoga teacher, 500 hr. Viniyoga teacher, and Viniyoga Therapist.  She is a Certified Yoga Therapist with the International Association of Yoga Therapists and is Curriculum Coordinator and Faculty with the American Viniyoga Institute’s Yoga Therapist Training.  Locally, Mary coordinates and is the lead teacher for the 200 hr. and 300 hr. River Flow Yoga Teacher Trainings.

Her 30 year career as a registered dietitian/nutritionist and health educator in public health, nutrition, and chronic disease prevention, inform her yoga teaching and individualized Yoga Therapy.
