Part 2: The Power of Sound for Healing
By Katie Ruiz, LMT, E-RYT & Certified Vibrational Sound Practitioner
Can a “sound bath” aid in healing? How does it work?
“A sound bath experience promotes deep relaxation and incorporates meditation and a body scan,” says Katie Ruiz, LMT, E-RYT, and a Certified Vibrational Sound Practitioner offering sound bath experiences at 5 Koshas.
“During a sound bath, the participant usually rests in a supine position, supported by blankets and bolsters with toes facing out and palms turned upright. I play a variety of instruments like singing bowls, chimes, and drums. Sometimes the class offerings will include yoga and sometimes the sound bath will stand as the primary offering. The goal of vibrational sound therapy is to restore balance and homeostasis in the body,” Katie explains.
A sound bath promotes healing in several ways. It can help:
- Lower blood pressure
- Increase circulation
- Reduce pain
- Renew sense of calm
- Improve sleep quality
- Promote stronger immunity with shortened healing times
- Aid in clearing heavy energy and unblocking chakras (the body’s energy centers) and meridians (specific organs)
“If you are new to sound bath healing and want to participate, we encourage students to bring a yoga mat, blanket, and small pillow. Mats, blankets, and bolsters are also available onsite at 5 Koshas,” Katie says. “I would also encourage students to bring a water bottle since hydration is an essential component for healing.”
