Hi I’m Annie Lockwood and I’ve been practicing yoga for over 20 years. Yoga was introduced to me when I was experiencing tendonitis in my forearms from typing at work. After only a few weeks of practicing yoga twice a week, my tendonitis healed. I was AMAZED! We continued to meet twice a week with others from the office to practice yoga together. I appreciated the physical benefits and the camaraderie of practicing in a group. Then I got married and moved away from my yoga group.

There were no yoga classes in my new location. I missed yoga, so I looked up videos to practice with. I began a daily practice on my own. I learned that there was more to yoga than the physical benefits. I didn’t understand what was happening. With regular practice I noticed my moods were more balanced, I had increased self-confidence, less anxiety/stress, and more compassion for others in addition to the following physical benefits increased flexibility, strength, and balance. I found that I wanted to understand yoga better and learn how to apply techniques to achieve specific results, and I wanted to share this amazing experience with others!

I began teacher training with Elizabeth Patric, Northwoods Yoga Teacher Training School. With Liz’s mentoring and guidance, I began teaching yoga classes. I have taught classes for beginners, intermediate level, chair yoga for seniors, and toddler yoga at daycare centers. My passion is practicing with adults and sharing the deeper teachings that yoga has to offer.

In 2013, I took a sabbatical from teacher training school and instructing classes to raise a family. I was just about to complete my final project and exam to earn the 200-hour teacher certification, when my first-born son arrived 4 weeks early. I now have a 9-year-old energetic son and a 7-year-old spirited daughter.

I continued my personal yoga practice throughout the years and have learned that a regular yoga practice doesn’t require 60 minutes a day to experience the benefits yoga has to offer! In the Spring of 2021, I reached out to Mary Hilliker, with the River Flow Yoga Teacher Training School, to ask for help in completing my 200- hour teacher training as well as mentoring to prepare to begin teaching group classes again. On August 28th, 2022, I earned my 200-hour yoga teacher certification!

Yoga has helped heal my tendinitis, and continues to support my body, mind and spirit as each year brings new challenges into my life. My practice aids in easing my anxiety, supporting a walking routine, and brings a sense of balance and perspective to my life. I look forward to sharing the gift of yoga with others again!

Intentions and Teaching Style

My intentions for the classes I share with others is to provide techniques to aid with stress and anxiety reduction while incorporating targeted joint care movement sprinkled in with traditional yoga postures. I have a desire to understand why yoga postures and pranayama techniques work and will include this type of education in classes. Classes are for beginners and intermediate level students.

My Favorite Yoga Pose

Vrikshasana (Tree Pose) Trees grow old with wisdom of the earth. They are rooted securely into the ground, and they reach upwards toward the heavens. They live through many seasons, and I am in awe to what they can endure.

In Vrikshasana, nothing matters but the present moment.

Somedays my tree pose is windy while my balance is rocky and other times my pose is strong, steady, and calm.
